Norman Mongan is the eldest son of the late Reginald Michael Mongan (1897 – 1962), Irish Army officer (1922-23), District Leader LSF South Dublin (1939-45), a Senior Civil Servant and Dublin businessman.

He descended from the O Mongans of Monganstown, near Kinnegad in Westmeath, Hereditary Guardians of the 7th Century Church of St Colman mac Luachan at Clongawney, Mullingar, and chieftains to the O Connor Faly kings of Offaly in the 16th Century.

An ardent Francophile and European, Norman Mongan, by vocation a writer, photographer, filmaker and musician, has – apart from spells in New York and Milan – resided in Paris since 1962, a freelance creative consultant with major adverising agencies throughout Europe and contibutor to publications in France, UK, Ireland and USA.

His first book The History of the Guitar in Jazz was published in New York (1984) and Paris (1986).
