This 23rd Anniversary Re-Issue of the original 1993 IRISH CHATEAUX POSTER is being republished in parallel with the 1916 Centenary Celebrations to commemorate the heroism of the 18th century Irish Wild Geese swordsmen who served with valiant Irish Regiments in France, Spain, Austria and Russia, across European battlefields.
Irish author and indie filmmaker Norman Mongan designed this iconic “Irish Chateaux Poster” in 1993, having by then resided in Paris for three decades, 1962-1992. He became a fine wine aficionado with a special interest in Irish involvement in the French vineyards over many generations due to his Parisian friendship with the late wine connoisseur Robert Dillon-Corneck.
The poster was published in 1993 in association with the now defunct ‘Sunday Tribune’ newspaper and was quickly sold-out as a much sought- after conversation piece. It led to real Irish Chateaux Tours being organised in 2002 when Air France then initiated direct Dublin – Bordeaux flights for a few years. Long out of print, he is now republishing this new 23rd Anniversary Poster along with the 1916 Centenary Celebrations to commemorate these 18th century Irish military men in France.
It pays homage to the many Wild Geese Irish swordsmen who followed James II into exile at Chateau de St Germain-en-Laye, outside Paris, after the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. They fought with the Irish Brigade, commanded by Sir Charles O’Brien, 6th Viscount Clare, in the service of Louis XIV and Louis XV, for France, notably at Fontenoy in 1745 with the Regiments of Bulkeley, Clare, Dillon, Lally, O’Brien, Berwick and Fitzjames cavalry. Several later acquired wine estates and have left their names on some of the most prestigious fine wines of France. The O’Brien descendants are associated with Chateaux Yquem and Marquis de Goulaine estates, the Dillons with Chateau Dillon, Haut-Brion, Mission Haut-Brion, Quintus, Hennessy with Cognac, Lynch with Chateaux Lynch-Bages, Pontac- Lynch, Dauzac and Lynch-Moussas, the MacMahons with the Domaine du Duc de Magenta, as former President of France, 1873-75 and 1875-79.
This is a beautiful full-colour 57x82cm format (25 1/2 x 32 1/4 inches) poster with high quality reproductions of the Irish Chateaux wine labels, digitally printed on archival quality 200grs Silk stock, revealing vivid colour and exceptional detail, suitable for even gallery and museum display, using a four colour process with a machine- sealed varnish finish.
